Ode to Thread Heaven: Savior of My Hands and My Sanity

Ode to Thread Heaven: Savior of My Hands and My Sanity

Today, I’m going to tell you a little story. A story about my mad infatuation with a magical substance called Thread Heaven (affiliate link), a thread and embroidery floss conditioner that is solely responsible for saving both my hands and my sanity.

This story begins with a book. More specifically, the cross-stitch book that I’m currently writing, and the resulting mountain of sewing that such a book necessitates. It’s fun work, but it’s still a bit tough on the hands, especially after a long day of solid stitching. Luckily, I’ve recently discovered a marvelous little blue box—no, not the TARDIS—and it has been nothing short life-changing.

Pattern: Geometric Color Block Cross-Stitch iPhone Case

Pattern: Geometric Color Block Cross-Stitch iPhone Case | The Zen of Making

When it comes to cross-stitch and embroidery, I’ve always been drawn to geometric and repeating patterns, especially those found in styles like laid work and blackwork. I love how, when joined together, even the simplest lines and shapes can create rich, vibrant textures on an otherwise unremarkable surface. (It’s kind of like quilting in that way: you piece one quilt block at a time, then those blocks seem to magically transform into something completely different when sewn together in a finished quilt.) I really like the idea that surprisingly intricate designs can be constructed by combining individual elements in predictable yet creative ways, and that’s exactly what I had in mind as I designed this geometric color block cross-stitch iPhone case pattern.

When stitching my case, I used my favorite primary color scheme: blue and red. Not a fan? Don’t let that scare you away! You can always customize the colors in the pattern to fit your own personal style.

Book Projects: READ Cross-Stitch Wall Panel for BiblioCraft | The Zen of Making

I am a woman who loves books. (You’re shocked, I’m sure. I’ll give you a moment to recover.) So, when my pal Jessica Pigza approached me about doing a project for BiblioCraft: The Modern CrafterÂ’s Guide to Using Library Resources to Jumpstart Creative Projects [this is an affiliate link], the library-themed book that she was working on, the question wasn’t if I would design something, it was what I would design. And, after much brainstorming, I decided that my feelings of library-related affection could only be adequately expressed by something really, really big. And thus, the READ cross-stitch wall panel was born!

Before I tell you more about my project, I should probably let you get acquainted with the book. Here’s how the publisher, STC Craft, describes BiblioCraft:
