Review: Sublime Floss™ Embroidery Floss from Sublime Stitching | Red-Handled Scissors

When Jenny from Sublime Stitching sent me the new Sublime Floss™ collection this fall, I was beyond excited. When I opened the package and saw the rich, beautiful colors, visions of elaborate projects and pretty borders began immediately to dance through my head. Then life, the holidays, and multiple craft conferences happened, and suddenly it was February. (Strange how these things happen, right?) Luckily, neither embroidery nor Sublime Floss™ seem to be going away anytime soon!

As someone whose work includes a whole lot of embroidery, cross-stitching, and appliqué, I knew that I wanted to write about Sublime Floss™, but I wanted to make sure that I had a few solid projects under my belt first. So, to really get a feel for the product, I spent the last few weeks substituting Sublime Floss™ for my usual DMC in all of my stitching projects. The results: I think I’m in love.

According to the Sublime Stitching website:

Grab and go with our exclusive line of Sublime Floss™ color packs! Every palette has seven, 8.75 yd (8m) skeins of the finest quality, 100% cotton, six-stranded floss. Smooth, shiny and colorfast! Each palette tells a story, and every color is a character.

Colors not sold individually at this time.

Retail price (per palette): $6.00
Retail price (set of all nine Palettes-63 skeins): $50.00

First things first, I’d like to thank Jenny for putting together such thoughtful and useful color palettes. It’s great to be able to grab one seven-color pack and know that the colors will complement each other, no matter how I put them together—it really simplifies the selection process. I found the Portrait, Parlour, and Rainbow palettes to be especially useful in my projects.

And now, on to the details:

What I loved:

  • The flosses were colorfast. I sprayed the Dowager countess with water multiple times to remove the water soluble ink that I’d used to transfer the pattern. I didn’t notice any bleeding or color transfer in any of the colors that I used.
  • The flosses were smooth, comfortable to the touch, easy to work with, and easy to separate into strands. Sublime Floss™ was absolutely comparable to other high quality flosses.
  • The color palettes made creating a cohesive color story really easy.
  • The colors were consistent throughout the entire length of each skein of embroidery floss.
  • I noticed very little fraying in the floss ends while I was stitching.
  • You can purchase the palettes individually or in a full set of all 9 color palettes (63 colors).

What I didn’t love:

  • You can’t yet buy skeins of individual colors, you must buy them in palette sets. This didn’t bother me while I was trying them out, but I’m sure I’ll be sad when my favorite colors start to run out. Plus, if you like matching your own colors, needing to buy multiple palettes to get certain shades might not be ideal.
  • If you’re used to DMC colors, you might have trouble matching exact colors. This isn’t a problem for me—I like to pick my own colors anyway—but it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

Note: The Dowager countess also includes beading and metallic thread that were not part of the Sublime Floss™ color palettes.

Overall impressions:
I loved Sublime Floss™, and I will definitely be using it again for future projects. I think it’s a great option for anyone who wants buy high quality floss while supporting a business that’s owned by a fellow maker.

Great review! I appreciate hearing what you liked and didn’t like. And I do hope the company will make individual colors available some time in the future. But the color palette packaging is so appealing. And tempting!
